Top Diving Myths Put To The Sea Bed
Lets be honest, if you’re a first time diver or even a Divemaster you have probably thought at some point, is this really safe? Am I going to be eaten alive by a shark or a monster of the sea? Truth is, we cannot escape these fears, but in reality, that’s all they really are, fears. They say that the way to conquer fear is to face them head on, and the more experienced we have become at diving, the more informed we have become about the whole experience and can now put some of the top diving myths to the sea bed once and for all!
Dive Myth: I Am Going To Be Eaten Alive By A Shark Or Sea Monster
Dive Truth:
So then... THE most popular dive myth is that sharks are dangerous and in true movie style Jaws is going to rip you up and eat you alive! Top marks for effort Hollywood. Truth is, you are more likely to be attacked by a bee or your pet dog than you are being eaten by a shark. Imagine it from the sharks perspective; you are causally going about your day until you see a noisy, bubbling, big finned alien flapping about aimlessly, of course you are going to approach out of curiosity, but more than likely you are going to run for the corals at the sight of our unnatural scuba gear! If you are approached by a shark, keep a steady distance, stay calm and enjoy the adrenaline of seeing one of the most breathtaking creatures in the world. If it becomes too close for comfort, calmly swim away and do not provoke it. Chances are they are just interested in the unidentified swimming object!
The real truth in fact is actually very sad. Compared to the 5 fatal shark attacks on average every year, there are some staggering 100 million – 273 million sharks that are killed every year by humans, posing the question; who's the real killer?
Shark Point is one of our favourite dive sites to spot sharks and is also home to our favourite wreck site, The Glen Nusa! Did you know we take requests for dive sites? We’d love to dive Shark Point with you!
Dive Myth: Diving Is Expensive
Dive Truth:
Do I have to purchase my own equipment to begin dive courses? Do I have to buy the equipment for a fun dive? Quite simply… No!
If you want to learn to dive or are an amateur diver looking to complete a course to get certified, then be streetwise when choosing the right dive school. Most dive schools will let you borrow equipment for the whole duration of your course or fun dive, meaning diving can remain inexpensive for all. Phew! Of course, once you bite the diving bug you may want to invest in your own equipment which once all the gear is added up can be a considerable cost, but if you are enthusiastic enough to buy your own gear, then the chances are the more you dive, the more your money will be oh so well spent!

Dive Myth: Diving Is Dangerous
Dive Truth:
Diving will damage my ears right? I have to be a pro swimmer to dive anyway so I can’t… Don’t be fooled people! This myth is fuelled largely to the routine ‘swim test’ at the beginning of your Open Water course. In fact, this is just to see how you react to being in the water and if you are comfortable. By no means do you have to be an Olympic athlete swimmer! You do have to be in a decent physical condition to dive, but providing you are not heavily pregnant or susceptible to heart attacks to name a few, you’re half way there.
As for your ears, you can limit and avoid the amount of pressure build up if you relieve this pressure using the simple techniques learnt in your dive lesson by equalising as you ascend and descend every couple of meters or so. No problem!

Dive Myth: I Don’t Need To Dive As I’ve Snorkelled Before
Dive Truth:
Snorkelling is a great way to introduce the beauty of the underwater World. As tranquil as it is to float above coral reefs admiring the fish tank below, diving lets you explore the world and not just the tank! If you’re a snorkel enthusiast, do not stop there and get yourself suited up and down into the depths to see the whole picture. You will probably end up swapping the snorkel for the air tank and leave it as a time waster in between diving!
So there you have it, some of the most popular dive myths put officially to the bottom of the sea bed! Diving opens up a whole new world and one that will probably change the way you travel forever. Don’t let these myths put you off the experience of a lifetime and share the news everywhere so that everyone can feel confident in taking the plunge and marvel in the magical underwater Kingdom that lays below.
