PADI Divemaster Liz Abraham
The PADI Divemaster is basically an immersive diving course which introduces you into the professional path that is possible for a diver. Not only that but it fine tunes your diving skills to a level beyond your expectations.
Becoming a divemaster is one of the most challenging but rewarding experiences you can do. For many people divemasters isn’t even on their radar.
At Dive Central Gili the divemaster course is constantly being run and as a dive centre they are highly recommended. Currently there are three divemaster trainees busy with their course. I sat down with one of them to pick their brains about their experience.
Liz Abraham, 28, hails from New Jersey, USA, grew up at the beach and has always been in and around the water. She didn’t realise how much the ocean was apart of her identity until she lived in landlocked countries. She then moved to Sydney and started Scuba Diving in the Great Barrier Reef.
Liz decided to do her PADI Divemaster as she was interested in taking her passion for diving and the ocean to the next level. She wanted to challenge herself to enter the professional realm and round out her nautical experience.
Before starting her PADI Divemasters course she expected that is would be a lot of hard work a lot of tank carrying. Although this is part of it she was surprised at how much the Dive Central Gili team took her in as part as one of their own and they all became a cohesive unit who all work towards a common goal.
“I have really enjoyed the exposure to all the different areas of the dive industry. The different PADI courses being run different continuously and learning from well respected members of the diving community.”
Looking towards the future Liz will be wrapping up her PADI Divemasters course and will work towards finding a job as a professional Dive Master to hone her skills further. Next she will look into getting involved in conservation and research projects.
“I really enjoyed the dynamic community on Gili Trawangan, that’s centred on the ocean and the outdoors. Also the symbiosis of local and dive community working together, the beautiful weather and the easy lifestyle we all enjoy.”
